Dr. Pepper Soda Crate & Plaster Skulls

Art Instructor, Stephanie Bandera, had just begun to work with artists from our Cultural Education Center for the Arts (CECA) Program. The artists were invited to participate in a Dia de los Muertos Altar event at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA). Bandera guided the artists through a mold making process using Plaster of Paris to create the plaster skulls embedded into the sculpture. After casting, each plaster skull was hand painted by different artists. Upcycling was of high interest at the time and an old soda crate was decided to be the base of the structure. The sculpture went on to be shown at MOLAA in 2011. Bandera was able to bond and build relationships with the artists at CECA through the process of creating and participating in discussions about shared cultural backgrounds.
